We did Techstars Oakland in 2024. Three months in the Bay Area, full-time accelerator mode. Here’s what actually mattered — and what didn’t.
What mattered
Narrowing the message
Before Techstars, we described Runbear in too many ways to too many people. The program forced us to sharpen our positioning weekly. By the end, we could explain what we do in one sentence that landed every time.
This sounds simple. It took 12 weeks of iteration.
Weekly KPI discipline
Tracking metrics weekly with accountability from mentors and EIR changes your relationship with data. It’s not about the dashboard — it’s about having a forcing function that makes you confront reality every 7 days.
Our revenue 4x’d during the program. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
The batch
Ten other founders going through the same thing at the same time. Some of the most useful advice came from batchmates, not mentors. They’re the ones who understand the specific texture of your problems because they’re living similar ones.
They’re also the ones who told us to rename from PlugBear to Runbear. Unanimously.
What didn’t matter as much
Most mentor meetings
You’ll have a lot of 1-on-1s. Maybe 20% are genuinely useful. The rest are well-intentioned but generic. The trick is recognizing which 20% fast and going deep with those people.
The “Techstars network” as an abstract concept
The network is real, but it’s not magic. It’s useful when you have a specific ask for a specific person. “I’m in Techstars” opens doors, but you still have to walk through them yourself.
Demo day as a fundraising event
Demo day is a milestone, not a mechanism. The actual fundraising happens in the weeks and months after, through relationships you built during the program.
The real takeaway
Techstars was worth it — but not for the reasons I expected. The structured pressure to improve every week, the batchmates, and the handful of mentors who genuinely got our space made the difference.
If you’re considering an accelerator: go in with clear goals, protect your building time, and treat it as a compression function for decisions you’d take 6 months to make otherwise.
